Seems the market for software vendors continues to shrink. This is another heads turning acquisition, not long after SS&C bought Advent, although a magnitude smaller.

Dexia fund arm sale suffers setback
The acquisition of Dexia Asset Management by private equity firm GCS Capital seems to stumble says Ignite. This looks like a déjà vu: Deutsche Bank wasn't able to sell its fund admin arm to Guggenheim. Other deals did materialize, e.g.: BlackRock acquired Credit Suisse’s ETF business and Orix Corporation closed on Robeco, Rabobank's fund business.

Dexia agrees sale of fund unit for €380m
Finally Dexia has sold its asset management arm although for much less than originally indicated. The buyer, GCS Capital, interestingly is tightly linked to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (“ICBC”), so GCS' own press release. ICBC has quite a history and has been looking to tap into various acquisition opportunities throughout recent years not only in Europe.
Seems major acquisitions of asset management units are still possible in Western Europe; possibly a relief for those who tried and failed over the last two years...

Hauck & Aufhäuser Investment Gesellschaft S.A. geht mit XENTIS live

KPMG-Studie: Fondsbuchhaltungssysteme in Luxemburg

IGEFI Hires Oded Weiss as CEO
These changes in the top management level at IGEFI, with its product line MultiFonds running at clients like Dexia, BNP, Citi and HSBC worldwide, are surprising - Bertil Rouveure and Van Ta have been up there for too long and have just been too mighty to be replaced, it seemed. Not for much longer, though: Bertil Rouveure is no longer CEO. He has been replaced with Oded Weiss, obviously "installed" by Summit Partners, who has been working for McKinsey and PWC before.
I do wonder what has happened at IGEFI, since there were no signs of retirement for Mr. Rouveure.

LRI Invest implementiert Profidata

SimCorp signs Nomura Bank (Luxembourg) S.A.
SimCorp strikes again - this time it's in Luxembourg. Nomura Bank, a fund administrator, will be using SimCorp Dimension for its fund accounting.
As an interesting side note: Germany's MainTrust belongs 100% to Nomura. Maintrust is using Sungards V3, which will cease to be regularly supported after 2010.

SGSS names new head of fund distribution services
This was pretty much foreseeable after the acquisition of EFS by Société Générale 2 years ago: my 3 former colleagues (Rautenberg, Lux, Jeandey) and partners of EFS have left. Pascal Bérichel has taken over the CEO role and replaces Gert Rautenberg.
Update 8th of August 2008: Gert Rautenberg has joined Brown Brothers Harriman as a managing director responsible for the firm's transfer agency product, which supports globally distributed fund ranges that are domiciled in Luxembourg, Ireland, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands. Prior to joining BBH in Luxembourg, Rautenberg was head of transfer agency and shareholder services for Société Générale Securities Services. Rautenberg was one of the founders and chief executive of European Fund Services, which was established in 2000 in Luxembourg as an outsourcing and service platform for the European investment fund industry and was subsequently acquired by Société Générale in 2006.

CBP Luxembourg Selects Thomson eXimius As Private Client Wealth Management Solution
This is the first deal for Thomson's wealth management product eXimius in the central European markets that I have heard of ever since eXimius was acquired.
Most interesting in this press release was the mentioning of the selection process that must have been a rather big one. I wonder how eXimius won against systems like Odyssey's TripleA or Expersoft's PM1. Seems that Thomson has beefed up heavily eXimius' funtionality.

TA Roundtable Discussion: "TA revolution takes hold"
This Luxembourg based roundtable discussion on the future of transfer agency took place in January 2008 and was held as a follow-up to a previous study that included fund promoters, distributors and service providers in 11 European countries.
As this blog tries to focus more on the IT system side of the business, I would like to point out 3 conclusions that were drawn:
- "Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of those interviewed expect that there will be a great deal more automation in the next three years nearly three quarters of those surveyed do not believe that there will be much more consolidation in this business over this time period."
- "Everyone agrees that the European TA business is operationally inefficient in that it is not capable of handling increasingly complex fund structures coming onto the market today in any volume. The issue is what can be done about it. Faxes are still the most common method settling fund transactions with STP rates well under 50%."
- "There is a widespread view that there will be convergence of in the long only and alternative fund industries and that this will have significant consequences for the TA process in the future. In particular the industry is increasingly looking for generalist TA systems that combine the features required to do long only and alternative funds. Systems capable of dealing with share equalisation are now a must, said many interviewees."

Postbank Luxembourg implements SimCorp Dimension’s Fund Accounting in seven months
Deutsche Postbank International (PBI) has successfully been going to production with the fund accounting module within, what Simcorp says, 7 months.
Although PBI being a rather small investment banking institution, Simcorp stresses the fact that short running projects are possible with its system - contrary to what some people in the market seemed to have been noting.
I wonder if this has any impact on the system that will finally be selected and implemented at the German Postbank Private Investment (PPI).

The Challenge of OTC Derivatives for (Luxembourg) Fund Service Providers
Derivatives are increasingly used to improve the performance in the fund industry. With the convergence of traditional and alternative investments, this trend is getting even stronger. Additionally, the local Luxembourg new SIF legislation (heavy PDF article in HedgeWeek) is further opening the door for more derivatives investment.
Aside from listed derivatives (options / futures), the ability to deliver services around OTC derivatives have emerged as a differentiating factor for Fund Service Providers always eager to attract new clients or more funds from their clients.
A growing part of the Fund Service Providers offer a range of services around OTC derivatives in Luxembourg, from handling custody and fund accounting to collateral management or independent valuation. There is room for more, despite a few hurdles to overcome.
Those hurdles are familiar challenges for the Luxembourg Funds Industry: People and Systems. Finding the profiles with, at the same time, OTC derivatives skills and in-depth knowledge of the Fund industry is even more challenging due to the product complexity which has nothing common with traditional instruments. They require systems able to capture trades, handle reconciliations, allow reporting per strategy or specific functionalities such as pricing.
From a technology point of view, the emergence of FpML as a standard for OTC derivatives should improve STP handling among Fund Administrations. Coming for the Asset Management Industry, those new systems and standards will have a significant impact on the existing IT infrastructures of Fund Service Providers. A new gap to bridge between the Fund Administrators and Asset Managers capabilities…
The growth of OTC derivatives has also driven the development of emerging services such as risk monitoring and advanced support to build structured product or trade execution services.
Luxembourg fund service providers shall keep a close eye on this market which from now on.

Unitech helped European Fund Services in building new IT architecture
This is a very interesting piece of information which highlights the history of the EFS acquisition by Société Générale in 2006 (see mergers & acquisitions consultant CIB Partners) and what has happened behind the scene. There is just one slight error: when SocGen took over EFS there was already a very powerful architecture in place in Luxembourg, which was one of the major reasons for the takeover (see also my other post here).
