KPMG-Studie: Fondsbuchhaltungssysteme in Luxemburg

Barrington: "Portfolio Accounting Systems" Survey 2009
The Barrington Report 2009 on Portfolio Accounting Systems is available now, as usual with a hefty price tag (3000 $). It covers buy and sell side systems, and portfolio management and fund accounting systems.
Not all of the fund accounting systems in use in the German speaking markets are covered: Sungard's GP3 and Profidata's Xentis, oddly enough, are missing. SimCorp's Dimension and IGEFI's MultiFonds is included though. Princeton Financial System's PAM, currently prepared for its release in Germany, is also handled.
The survey says it covers systems also from Germany (in fact, none of the systems are from Germany but used in Germany; the only system being from Germany, Diamos F, is not even mentioned), and altogether 33 systems are reviewed. But by omitting a major player in the German speaking market (for whatever reason) makes this report come up a tad bit short...

IGEFI Hires Oded Weiss as CEO
These changes in the top management level at IGEFI, with its product line MultiFonds running at clients like Dexia, BNP, Citi and HSBC worldwide, are surprising - Bertil Rouveure and Van Ta have been up there for too long and have just been too mighty to be replaced, it seemed. Not for much longer, though: Bertil Rouveure is no longer CEO. He has been replaced with Oded Weiss, obviously "installed" by Summit Partners, who has been working for McKinsey and PWC before.
I do wonder what has happened at IGEFI, since there were no signs of retirement for Mr. Rouveure.

IFAG - Institutionelle Fondsleitung AG - went live with IGEFI´s MultiFonds Fund Accounting platform
This is indeed interesting although not of great impact - Liechtenstein truly is in IGEFI's hand now, since the 3 major investment institutions LGT, LBB und VP-Bank already were using MultiFonds Fund Accounting.

Swiss Life setzt auf SimCorp Dimension

Standard Chartered Bank goes live on IGEFI’s MultiFonds Fund Accounting platform
As already indicated in a rumour post a while ago - now it's official: Another Asian based client (besides HSBC) has not only signed but has gone live with MultiFonds: Standard Chatered Bank..
IGEFI has its Asian head quarter and development department in Bangalore, India, which is run by Madame Van Ta, IGEFI's founder.
I believe that a great deal of future growth for IGEFI will come from Asia.

Standard Chartered Bank chooses IGEFI MultiFonds ?
According to the latest rumors, Standard Chartered Bank has chosen IGEFI "MultiFonds Fund Accounting" as their new fund accounting solution. This decision seems to be valid for all subsidiaries around the world.
If this will be confirmed, it would prove that IGEFI's strategy of making deals preferably with global players.

DekaBank chooses SimCorp Dimension
Finally, DekaBank has signed with Simcorp. The negotiations have been going on for months and first rumours about a possible stop popped up.
DekaBank plans to replace Sungard V3.Fonds with Simcorps Fund Accounting and compliance module.
This probably was the biggest deal that was left to do in Germany for a longer time. The biggest KAGs (German investment banking institution) are now "taken": DWS/DeAM and Allianz Global Investors use Simcorp, Union uses IGEFI MultiFonds, Universal and ComInvest use ProfiData Xentis. For fund accounting / back-office in KAGs, that is.

Citigroup's acquisition of Bisys strengthens its hand in the lucrative fund-services business
CitiGroup makes a big step forward with their Global Transaction Services group in acquiring Bisys, an Investment Services provider with $815 billion in assets under administration (see also Bloomberg comments).
As the sources say: "With this acquisition, Citi will become a top-three player in transfer agency, fund administration and accounting for U.S. mutual funds." and "In hedge funds area the acquisition positions Citi to compete against top custodians Bank of New York Mellon Corp., State Street Corp. and JPMorgan Worldwide Securities Services."
This means a lot of system migrations, primarily for fund accounting. Since CitiGroup is using MultiFonds, IGEFI will be busy helping CitiGroup to manage the absorption of Bisys assets on its own IT platform.

The U.S. Fund Accounting Systems Review 2007
Barrington delivers yet again a new research on fund accounting systems in the US (the equivalent latest version of their European counterparts is dated 2003).
The following systems were reviewed:
- Eagle Investment Systems- EagleSTAR
- LineData (GIS)- MFACT
- IGEFI- MultiFonds
- SimCorp- SimCorp Dimension
- State Street Bank- PAS
- SunGard LLC- InvestOne
Obviously, two systems that are originated in Europe seam to be able to get enough attention to be on that exclusive but not exhaustive list: MultiFonds and Dimension. I wonder why systems like MPacs (from Phoenix Systems) or Geneva (from Advent) are not on the list (just to name two).

Roundtable On Transfer Agency Strategies in Europe - Update
This "Transfer Agency Roundtable" discussion (of June 2006) shows the strategies of Société Générale and BNP Paribas on TA (also including Citi, Axa, UBS and Titanium Capital) in Europe. Seems SocGen had found a satisfying solution in acquiring European Fund Services S.A. (a TA services provider and outsourcer, and a company I helped building from 2000-2004) in Luxembourg. In the meantime, EFS has migrated all Pioneer customers onto its platform (IGEFI MultiFonds Transfer Agency) and is currently planning to implement a new platform in the anglo-saxon market.

Hedge Fund Demand Feeds Advances in Accounting Software
Here is an overview of fund accounting systems that can handle hedge funds (it is a little outdated, since it was written in 2004). However, the list is not exhausting, since, for example, IGEFIs MultiFonds Fund Accounting system is missing, and it does have a hedge fund module that can handle the requried functionality.

IGEFI announces Senior Appointment in America
IGEFI just announced another senior management addition: Terence Faherty, as the Managing Director of the Americas (which is US-American wording, and means that he will be responsible of America as a continent, not only the USA). This is the third ex-Sungard employee that IGEFI has hired within a short time frame (not to mention Paul Roberts from LineData).

Fund Accounting and Transfer Agency Systems in Ireland
This survey by Deloitte (called "Fund Administration in Ireland", done 2006 and obviously released to public) shows the fund accounting and transfer agency systems in use in Ireland.
Most interesting (on page 21) is the amount of in-house fund accounting systems used: almost one third! The rest is Geneva (by Advent, a global hedge funds system as it is described), InvestOne (by Sungard), Star (by Eagle), MultiFonds FA (by IGEFI) and MFACT (in the survey said to be by Global Investment Systems, in the meantime acquired by LineData).
Two more interesting facts (re. fund accounting systems):
1st: "Advent Geneva and SunGard InvestOne are the applications of choice for those planning to change." Seems Sungard is really having an edge in the anglo-saxon dominated market (see also my post on innovation awards).
2nd: "Over 50% plan to change their fund accounting system." The reason for that may be the fact that the survey found that "Current applications appear to be relatively old, with 25% over ten years old and 50% over five years". And: "Of those planning to change, the vast majority of the investment will take place in the near future (2006/07)."
Re. transfer agency systems (summarized on page 25), the "in-house packages account for the majority (35%) of current TA systems in place. Here RUFUS (by Bravura Systems) and NTAS (by Koger) account for another 40% of the market. All current installations of these packages took place in the last 5 years." MultiFonds Transfer Agency has less than 5% market share. Unnamed systems have close to 30%.
The administrators plannings reveal that "at present no respondents expect to change their current TA system, with over 70% having changed in the last 5 years. If they were to change, 50% stated a preference for NTAS."
Seems there currently is no dynamic movement in the TA system market in Ireland - contrary to the fund accounting system market.

Innovation Awards
Financial-i has identified the winners for 2006 in several categories, defined by an impressive number of analysts and consulters. Amongst the categories is "The most innovative fund administration and accounting solution". The winner is: SunGard, and they are referring to...InvestOne (not V3 or GP3)! You may want to have a look into my other post here (in German), where I have reflected on Sungards strategy in Germany.
Interesting sidemark: The company to watch was identified to be IGEFI. What does its CEO Bertil Rouveure focus on as the differentiation product feature is his note there ? "However, its outstanding feature is the ability to comprehensively service both mutual fund and hedge fund requirements. "
Other memorable awards are:
The most innovative order management solution: Charles River.f Company to watch: LatentZero
The most innovative securities services provider in Europe: BNP Paribas. Company to watch: RBC Dexia Investor Services
The most innovative reference data solution: Asset Control. Company to watch: Capco
You can find the awards in detail as a PDF here.
